Sorry it has been a while since I updated. Late season didn't smile much on me. I actually never got out after Thanksgiving.
After Mike and I secured the lease in Pattonsburg we decided to "sell" a couple of hunts to some of our freinds to help offset the lease payment. I have a concrete contractor at work that was a serious hunter and we had spoken about wanting to hunt together. Our schedules worked out for a trip over Thanksgiving Day Weekend. Besides myself and Wally, I decided to bring my son Hunter along. Wally had asked to bring along his freind Bill and Bill's son, Jake. So after a little turkey and a quick nap, we took off on Thanksgiving for NW Missouri.
We pulled in late thursday night and we all decided a little sleep was in order for Friday morning. At about 8am I drove them over to the property, we hung a couple of ladder stands, and took off for breakfast. Friday night I put Bill in a blind over looking a pasture. A spot where Mike had seen deer moving during the gun season. Jake set up in the SE corner of our property. I took Wally back, with his climber, to set up where I ended our rut trip down by the creek. Earlier in the day I had set up a two-man stand for Hunter and I. Hunter had climbed up in my ladder stands back in WI, but for some reason he was not fond of sitting with dad and soon asked if he could climb down. I would NOT be hunting on this trip! Hunter wanted to be down there with dad but wasn't ready to sit and hunt. I even let him bring his Gameboy but no luck! Sitting in the truck watching deer was more fun for him. As long as he still wants to go, I am OK!!
Friday night saw very little movement. Saturday morning things picked up. Bill sat in my stand that Hunter and I had planned to hunt the night before. He saw lot's of does and a few decent bucks. Jake saw a nice 10pt that he wanted to shoot but did not have a shot. Wally had jumped in the creek and quietly waded and got a better idea what was happening. Since Hunter did not want to hunt it was decided we would head home Saturday afternoon. Jake being 19 and his girlfreind home from college decided he would head back with us. As much as I didn't want too we headed home early.
As we headed through Iowa, Jake got the call from his dad. Big buck down! Wally had walked Bill back into the creek area and that was all it took!
Sunday night Wally had called me and advised he had taken a nice buck. As much as I wanted to be down there hunting myself, I was glad that my "clients" had connected.
December came and went quickly. My wife picked up a few extra hours of work and when I could go no one else could. I haven't seen a deer around the house since October and believe they made there way over to the county property to my southeast. We wrapped up the fishing season in October on such a high note. Hunting season wrapped up about as lousy as could be. However, we head off into 2008 with 2 pts in Iowa and a very good chance at scoring that tag. We will have Pattonsburg much further figured out. It will be here before we know it!
