NRA's ARMED CITIZEN

People fled in terror when a gunman entered a medical building and took several people hostage.  A doctor at the practice, Jeff Ferguson, retrieved his gun and guarded an exit allowing an estimated 50 people to escape down a stairwell, warning them, "If this guy opens this door, I'm going to have to shoot him." Ferguson said after the ordeal, "I was absolutely prepared to shoot him, yes."  Despite negotiator's best efforts to get 28-year-old Dominic Oliver to surrender peacefully, he was later shot during a confrontation with police.  He died at a local hospital hours later. This month's posting reflects an example from "studies [which] indicate that firearms are used more than 2 million times a year for personal protection, and that the presence of a firearm, without a shot being fired, prevents crime in many instances.  Shooting usually can be justified only where crime constitutes an immediate, imminent threat to life, limb, or in some cases, property."
