Fishing Report, Lake Guntersville 6/2/12
The heat of the day is warming the water temperatures to the 90’s but so far this hasn’t seemed to hurt the bite at least for most the day. The bass are extremely active for the first 4 to 6 hours of the day and we had some really good catches this past week. My fishing has been limited to just a few hours daily as I am involved in some things I need to do, but the times I was on the water it has been really surprising just how good the fishing is.
The first 2 hours and some days beyond we are catching fish with top water baits, like Assassinator buzz baits, pop-r and spooks and frogs over the grass. The other good news is if the area your fishing is still light on grass the Punisher Spinner Bait bite is still strong. Their new short arm Flame Junior in a chartreuse color ¾ oz. has been very successful along the ledges that the grass is not thick. I have a theory about the fishing at the moment, some of you may agree, others may not but here it goes. TVA has pulled very little water this year because the lakes above Guntersville and Nick-a-jack are way down because of lack of rain and run off. This is pushing the bass up to the shallows to feed instead of feeding along the deeper channels when there is current. I believe this is why the top water bite has been so strong. Generally when it’s hot like this the bass suspend and then move to the breaks on the ledges to feed when they are pulling water. With the lack of water current, it’s changed the basses feeding patterns and hence the top water bite is staying strong!
Fishing is good, there is a fairly strong 6 hour day for sure, and plenty better days to come!
